Little Mix - “Salute”
"Get your killer heels, sneakers, pumps, or lace up your boots / representing all the women / salute, salute"
Little Mix have dealt before with shoes as a shorthand for intentionally-constructed identity, and with army metaphors. They’re using shoes the same way here, I think, as they do in “We Are Who We Are,” as a way to reference not some natural unchangeable self but an intentional self, a self that’s autonomous and intentional and varied.
But the army metaphor has shifted. Before, the question of bodily autonomy was open-ended, inconclusive, the fight for it a little desperate. Before, the army metaphor represented a conscription into an institution that the person in question didn’t necessarily choose.
Now, it’s about organization. It’s about—sorry to use this word so much, but it’s probably one of the most important words to use when talking about Little Mix—solidarity. You are not a soldier for a cause you neither control nor chose. You are a soldier for yourself. You are a soldier for your fellows. You are not led. You are leading.
You are my sweetest downfall. I loved you first.
Tonight You’re Perfect | New Politics
"For his audition for Prince Hans (from Frozen) he sang a cover of "I Feel Pretty" from the musical West Side Story, though had altered lyrics, turning the song into a self-centered, narcisistic, yet funny chant.” [x]
THEY SHOULD HAVE PUT THIS IN THE MOVIE AS HIS VILLAIN SONG, OMG HANS.
